Degree Will Prepare Graduates for Careers in Startups, Multinational Corporations and Consulting Firms
每日大瓜鈥檚 s announced today that it will offer a new master鈥檚 degree in taxation. The one-year, 30-credit program, will draw on the school鈥檚 unique expertise to place graduates on the cutting-edge of today鈥檚 evolving tax world and enable them to succeed in any work or market environment.
鈥淚n a competitive job market, the technical skills and expertise in taxation, along with enhanced communication proficiency, become increasingly valuable,鈥 said Dr. Selma Botman, provost and vice president for academic affairs at 每日大瓜. 鈥淭he faculty has designed this program to address the tax fundamentals as well as the latest developments in an ever-changing tax environment. Upon completing our program, students will be well equipped with the requisite knowledge and skills to serve as highly-qualified tax professionals in diverse businesses such as startups, multinationals and large and small consulting firms.鈥
鈥淭he introduction of the graduate tax degree reflects the resourceful thinking that the Sy Syms Business School personifies, as well as its consistency in responding to the demands in the marketplace and the interests of our students,鈥 said Professor Leonard Fuld, the program鈥檚 director and a widely respected expert in tax law with nearly 40 years of practical experience as a senior tax professional at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Schlumberger Limited, Citigroup and Griffon Corporation. 鈥淚 am certain that we are in for interesting times in the world of taxation and an advanced tax degree from Sy Syms will significantly enhance each of our students鈥 knowledge base and prove to be a most valuable credential.鈥
Taught by CPAs, tax attorneys, and former IRS agents, each with in-depth, real world experience, the Master鈥檚 of Science in Taxation will hone the skills needed to apply tax principles and planning techniques in the operations of various types and styles of business enterprises. Especially crucial in the modern business environment, the program will imbue students with the skills they need to adapt to a continuously evolving regulatory landscape while managing their professional responsibilities concerning public interest, objectivity, integrity, independence and due care.
Courses will be offered in the spring, fall and summer semesters to allow students to complete all requirements for the degree or for those who may need extra coursework in accounting and taxation to fulfill New York State鈥檚 150 hour credit requirement to sit for the CPA exam. They will cover areas such as estate tax, federal income tax, ethical tax practice and procedure, deferred compensation and employee benefits, tax research, international tax, state taxation, taxation of flow through entities and shareholders, reorganizations and liquidations, and contemporary topics in taxation.
