Prof Joshua D. Zimmerman Publishes Op-Ed on Russia鈥檚 Sham Annexation Claims in Ukraine聽聽

Professor Joshua D. Zimmerman, Eli and Diana Zborowski Professorial Chair in Holocaust Studies and East European Jewish History, recently published an exploring the history of Ukraine鈥檚 path to independence thirty-one years ago and how it reinforces Ukraine鈥檚 current resolve for freedom. Zimmerman highlights at the time of Ukraine鈥檚 independence referendum in December of 1991, over 90 percent of ballot castors favored separation from the Soviet Union. In the piece, Zimmerman argues that Putin has ignored the historic plurality of Ukrainian鈥檚 nationalistic sentiment and identity in his justification for Russia's unprovoked war and illegal land grab. The article goes on to cite a historical case study which argues that Hitler鈥檚 annexation of Czechoslovakia mirrors Putin鈥檚 false territorial claims on Crimea and other areas of the Donbas.
