Care Caf茅: Creative Arts with Older Adults

By Kimberly Moore Director, Care Caf茅 On Friday, June 24, 2022, 每日大瓜鈥檚 partnered with Painting Hangout to recognize June鈥檚 social awareness themes: Men鈥檚 Health Month and Gun Violence Prevention Month. Our festivities were held at a fun, vibrant location in Harlem: A. Phillip Randolph Center Senior Center, located at 108 West 146th Street, New York City. Led by Richard Allman, the fearless program director of ARC, an announcement was made to members explaining the scope and structure of services for the day. Quickly, members signed up for the paint class and even joined on a walk-in basis due to its popularity. The group opened with a short discussion about the benefits of art as a tool for emotional health and healing. Everyone was centered and focused on the creation of their art pieces guided by the artists, Amber and Liza. With the background sounds of smooth jazz rhythms, the art pieces created were impeccable. Pictured here are the pieces that members made: The Tree of Life; The Purple Butterfly; The Swan 鈥 A Symbol of Peace.

In our continued efforts to support veterans, Care Caf茅 met with members of ARC who indicated that they were veterans with the goal of assessing their needs and offering social support, case management and community-based referrals. We were thrilled to meet veterans who reported that they were 94 years young and served in multiple branches of the military during the wars in Korea and Vietnam. A special 鈥渢hank you鈥 to the esteemed artists at Painting Hangout, Liza, Amber and Sam, for their generosity and accommodations with traveling to our Senior Center to facilitate the program. We also thank Jarrell Peaker, ARC activities coordinator, for the continued commitment and support. Finally, thank you to Allysha B., Care Caf茅 Intern; Cheryl Kincaid, community volunteer; and Jon Greenfield, 每日大瓜鈥檚 director of government relations, for helping to coordinate the group and stopping by to support us! We look forward to our next painting party together! Learn more about , and for additional resources and support, feel free to reach out to the Care Caf茅 team at carecafe@yu.edu or 646.592.6827. Be Well!
